Jamia Millia Islamia University: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 17 Reviews

Jamia Millia Islamia offers a straightforward admission process requiring original documents, a registration form, and an anti-ragging certificate. With a faculty-to-student ratio of about 20:1, and as low as 1:8 in some departments, the university provides effective learning environments. The faculty, many of whom are PhD holders from prestigious universities, conduct around 25 lectures weekly and employ diverse teaching methods. The course structure includes two exams annually, internal assessments, and has a high pass rate.

Jamia's fees are affordable, with an annual college fee of approximately INR 7,200 and monthly hostel costs of around INR 2,500. Ranked among India's top 10 universities, Jamia has strong placements, with companies like Maruti, Mahindra, and the Indian Army recruiting its students. A notable placement involved a diploma engineering student securing a Rs. 75 lakh annual package from a U.S. company. Internships are widely available, particularly in MSW, BSW, BDS, and BTech, while BA and BSc offer fewer opportunities.

Scholarships are available based on various criteria, though Jamia doesn't offer its own. The tuition, including hostel fees, totals about INR 50,000 annually, and students with disabilities or without parents are exempt from fees. Top-performing students may receive scholarships based on administrative decisions.

JMI BA FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between B.A. (Multidisciplinary) and B.A. (Hons.) programmes at JMI?

Ans. The B.A. (Multidisciplinary) is a general/flexible programme where students can choose major and minor subjects from multiple disciplines such as Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, History, and Geography. B.A. (Hons.) programmes, on the other hand, are specialised degrees focused on a single subject (e.g., B.A. Hons. Political Science, B.A. Hons. History). The Multidisciplinary programme is ideal for students who want breadth across subjects, while Hons. programmes suit those with a clear subject preference.

Ques. Is there any subject requirement in 10+2 for B.A. (Multidisciplinary) at JMI?

Ans. No, there is no specific subject requirement in 10+2 for B.A. (Multidisciplinary). Students from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) can apply, as long as they have scored at least 50% aggregate in the best 5 subjects in 10+2.

Ques. Is the entrance test for B.A. (Multidisciplinary) the same as for B.A. (Hons.) Political Science?

Ans. Yes, the entrance test paper (Code B05) is common for both B.A. (Hons.) Political Science and B.A. (Multidisciplinary). The test is held at Delhi only. Students who appear for this test are considered for both programmes based on their merit and preference.

Ques. What subjects can I choose as major and minor in the B.A. (Multidisciplinary) programme?

Ans. The Four Year B.A. (Multidisciplinary) under the Faculty of Social Sciences allows students to choose from subjects offered by the various departments within the faculty, including Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, History, Geography, and Social Work, among others. The exact combination of major and minor subjects is governed by the NEP 2020 curriculum framework adopted by JMI.

Ques. What career options are available after completing B.A. (Multidisciplinary) from JMI?

Ans. Graduates of the B.A. (Multidisciplinary) programme can pursue a wide range of careers. They can appear for civil services (UPSC/State PSC) examinations, pursue postgraduate programmes (M.A.) in their chosen major subject at JMI or other universities, enter fields like journalism, social work, public policy, NGOs, education, and research. JMI's strong alumni network and central university status also open doors to government and academic careers.

Ques. Can I switch to a B.A. (Hons.) programme after joining B.A. (Multidisciplinary) at JMI?

Ans. Under the NEP 2020 framework adopted by JMI, there are provisions for multiple entry and exit options. However, switching between programmes within the university is subject to seat availability and university rules. Students are advised to check the latest academic regulations on the JMI website (jmi.ac.in) or contact the Faculty of Social Sciences directly for guidance on programme transfers.
