NIT Durgapur, B.E.Mechanical
Reviewed on Jan 5, 2016

Remarks

College life started with 2-3 weeks Violent ragging period where students were verbally, physically and sexually abused.Their was a whole network of students to manage copying in exams and manage results and probably student welfare in-charge was hand in glove with them.

Entrance Preview

P.E.T. Madhya Pradesh, This was in 1987, It was a zero year in MP as the education system shifted from 8+3 to 10+2. I had the option of taking admission in NIT in Surat, Warangal, Kalicut I chose Durgapur as I was getting Mechanical.

Course Curriculum Overview

3

It was a regular Mechanical Engg course, electives were only in last 2 semesters. I had Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, other electives were Machine Design, Automobile etc

Internships Opportunities

No companies came and one had to apply and get intern-ships. Some of them were paid and some not. I did a 40 day with Bajaj Tempo.Their was not really any guidance offered it was each to his own. Also since it was a residential college, everyone wanted to combine their intern ship with vacations and tried finding out something close to homes.

Placement Experience

1.5

I appeared for Carrear Aircon and Philips. There was also Maruti, B.E. probably 20-30 out of 90 got placed. The companies offered 1.2 to 2.4 Lac/year

College Events

0.5

Hostel Day, Annual Day, Film Festival. They were all college level festival. Annual Festival use to have some artist visit. Once Usha Uthup came to the annual program

Fee Structure And Facilities

It was a Govt Added College. The fees was around 12000 Rs/ Year. We had to pay it monthly around 1200 Rs. The mess as compulsory and we had to pay 300 rs /month to had inedible food under compulsion.

Fees and Financial Aid

Their wasn't any loan facility that I am aware of. The education itself was not really expensive,There was of-course the SC ST students who had a different fees structure as far as I know

Campus Life

2

ZILCH is the world. Their was freely available Ganja for bright students who needed to slow down. Their were no workshops. No cultural societies. Their was some music activity primarily lead by student interest.

Hostel Facilities

1

First 2 years we lived in triple sharing room. the last 2 year was in single seater. Hostel mess were complete mess. It was compulsory to stay in hostel. Their was no other facilities. All the staff including teachers had a union.

Alumni/Alumna

Their was very little alumni activity. In those days it was known as Regional Engineering College. Their were student groups based on language, state and region. Their use to be welcome and farewell along these state and regional lines.

Exam Structure

It was completely chilld out. We had semester system. There was roughly 3-4 months of classes and labs. The time table was quite spaced out and their was no pressure except the one people took on their own accord

Faculty

3.5

Their were some very eminent prof including one Mr Ashok Sen who was part of design of a national stadium in Delhi during 82 Asiad games. Being in Bengal some professors had left leaning and though they were not overtly political, one could sense it. At the same time their were some faculty that made it challenging to sit in their class. College being autonomous their were also some very authoritarian profs who were very vindictive.

I don't have idea about the placements since I'm in first year now. But I talked to a senior and got to know that many got multiple offers in 4th year. I also head that packages are around 4 lpa which is a decent and also a rise than the previous year.

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

Placement Experience:

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
