Entrance Preview
I got admitted through AIEEE (now defunct) in 2011. I had got an AIR 20299. After appearing for IITJEE, AIEEE and WBJEE, I had set my eyes on Chemical Engineering. Based on my results, I was getting it in NIT Durgapur, Jadavpur University, NIT Raipur, IIEST-Shibpur.
Course Curriculum Overview
To get to know more about the courses offered, I browsed through the website of NIT Durgapur. Since Chemical was my forte, I thoroughly went through the curriculum per semester. It seemed appealing to my interests.
Internships Opportunities
Yes is for the selected few especially from Computer Science, IT and Electrical. Rest had to look for training/internship programmes on their own. However, NIT Durgapur has a dedicated Training and Placement Cell which looks into internships and training of students.
Placement Experience
The placement scenario is largely imbalanced. The branches of Computer Science, IT see the most mouth-watering placements with the likes of Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, Samsung, HP, Oracle etc. visiting the campus. The package soars in range of 15-30 Lakhs per annum (LPA) depending on the job-profile one gets chosen for.
College Events
NIT Durgapur offers a host of events to keep you engaged outside your academics. Culture fest: Recstasy by Students Gymkhana, which is the 2nd largest in east India after Spring Fest.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Being a Government-funded institute, funded by the AICTE, fees are on the lower side as compared to the private peers. However, fees have been increasing year -after-year. Currently, the fees stand at about Rs. 90,000 per semester as tuition+accommodation fees (including exam fees, library fees, laundry etc).
Fees and Financial Aid
Scholarships are few but available to the students coming economically weaker sections. Some departments like Metallurgy have scholarships for women. Education loans easily available from State banks.
Campus Life
Gender Ratio is largely skewed. In my batch of 800 only about 130 were women. Mechanical faces the largest gap with only 2-3 women among 150. Electronics and Biotech come closest in terms of a balanced gender ratio.
Exam Structure
The exam structure follows the semester system. Odd semester falls in the July-December phase and the even semester in the January-May phase. Mid-semester exams supplement the semester exams which occur 2 months before the end semesters.
