Remarks
The NIT Durgapur campus is one of its kind. Complete with newly renovated academic buildings, hostels, and other facilities, the overall quality of infrastructure continues to improve every year. Hostels provided are adequate although some of the older ones could be refreshed as they have been in a similar state and condition since the initial days of opening. Enough eateries and mess food along with regular everyday stores are in every corner of the campus as well. The admission process is lengthy, one should be prepared with all documents in an orderly fashion or it could take multiple hours or even a couple of days to complete. Main preference for choosing this college was its ranking and it is a premier institute. Location, overall freedom given to students within the campus, fests are all among the reasons for choosing this college as well.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is adequate, the computer science and engineering course offer relative subjects to future job prospects. The practical projects and coding experience are also one of the elements within the allocated marks given to students every year. The faculty to student ratio could be better, as around 80-100 in every classroom is too large a number for a good learning experience. The faculty is very diverse and are reputed individuals, some are loved by the students and others could improve their way of teaching in certain ways. The exams were held semester-wise, and difficulty depended on the subject. Some were rather easy and others super difficult.
Internships Opportunities
Companies that come for placements also hire for internships, other companies also come and it all depends on clearing the written rounds and subsequent interviews. Projects within the field help go a long way. Some rounds also include group discussions to check communication.
Placement Experience
The placements are great, a lot of companies and organizations come for campus placements throughout the year and offer all kinds of roles for everyone's requirement. Also, internship opportunities are there. Higher packages go up to around 14-18 LPA approximately. And most average is around 6 LPA. Mass companies also visit for hiring many students. The percentage of students getting placements is dependent on course, computer science students 70-80% get placed by the end of the year. After getting the degree my plan was to work and get on-field experience which is what I'm doing.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees were approximately 70,000 rupees per semester. These were the general fees per semester for most students. Scholarships and assistance are provided to students with category or low family income. There aren't any jobs I know of on campus with any stipend.
Campus Life
The campus life is one of the better parts of the college, multiple activities and fests are organized throughout the year from different clubs. Tech fests such as aarohan and annual fest such as recstasy are some of the bigger ones. The library is very vast and all sorts of material are available even in the digital form. Classroom amenities are basic, just with projectors and blackboards and desks and benches. All sorts of sports are there and there's a trial to be in the team. During the first year, we all have physical activity as a compulsory subject in which preference of activity of sport is given to do in the morning. There are multiple clubs such as DebSoc, Literary Circle, Maths n Tech club, etc.
Hostel Facilities
The hostels provided to me were Hall 12, which is allocated to students arriving from abroad. So it was one of the best hostels on the campus. Single rooms were provided with an attached bathroom and balcony. Along with fresh furniture such as beds, tables, chairs, and pillows/mattresses, Mess meals were okay for the amount paid, diversity could be given and quality could be improved however they were still alright enough to get by in 4 years. The locality is in the hub of all the other campuses and surrounded by some everyday need vendors and other eateries.
