Remarks

The college management has an anti student attitude but its the overall freedom and friends and fests in this college that makes NIT Durgapur an absolutely awesome experience provided you end up with a job.

Entrance Preview

I took IIT JEE well aware that I wasn't going to get much out of it my main exams were AIEEE and BITSAT. I fared well in BITSAT but was getting BITS Goa and Hyderabad, hence didn't opt for it. With my AIEEE rank I was getting Mechanical Engineering, my preferred branch, only in NIT Durgapur and a few other lower NITs. Plus since its in my home state and had a pretty good placement record, I opted for it. I also gave WBJEE but not with much enthusiasm since I already knew I was going to get into NIT Durgapur easily and had an apprehension regarding joining West Bengal state colleges.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course curriculum is almost the same as other NITs and IITs. If you're interested in research, this is probably not the college for you private colleges give much more help as far as research projects are concerned. That being said, the professors of the department, mainly the mechanical engineering department are pretty helpful. However, having interned at IIT Guwahati, it still has a long way to go in terms of facilities as well as the general drive from the profs.

Internships Opportunities

Okay the college does absolutely nothing to help you get an internship even getting the form signed after getting an approval from the "contacts" is a pain. This is mainly due to the anti student attitude of the academic section. Some profs from my department were pretty helpful among the companies, for mech, ACC, Hero Motocorp and CESC came. They provided somewhere close to 5k per month. I personally got into IAS programme and got 8K+transportation for two months my school guide Prof amarnath Mullick is one of the most helpful profs in the college.

Placement Experience

1

About 80 percent of the people got placed in my year thanks to the improvement in the economy. However, it was about 60 percent the year before. The college has a very uninterested approach towards placements. The level of frustration one endures cannot be described. Most of the companies come due to the reputation. The college makes absolutely no effort and extends no help even to placement co ordinators for getting more companies. The training and placement facilities are abysmal.

College Events

5

This is one department in which our college might excel over any other college about 6 7 fests are held throughout the year keeping the people entertained the cultural fest Recstacy, i would claim to be the biggest in East India, and better than even Spring Fest in terms of performer quality and freedom etc. The techno management fest Aarohan is pretty big too. There are other fests organized by the quiz club, SAE, Maths club, Music club, LUG etc. There are no shortage of activities throughout the year and it keeps you entertained and gives you the chance to earn money despite the rampant cheating that goes on.

Fee Structure And Facilities

In our year, the fee was about 25k per sem, ie 50k in a year excluding mess fees. Mees fees was about 20k per year. So all in all about 70k. However the mess food is inedible which necessitates expenditure outside the mess of which there is plentiful now, the yearly fees has been doubled to about 1 lakh per year. However its a proper investment. If you're from a BPL family or from the less developed states, you might get a full scholarship by using a modified income certificate which most people did.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes, you will always get a loan if you get into an NIT scholarships are provided only to SC's. ST's OBC's not to general males like me. Income is also a criteria, but like I mentioned before, most people came up with forged certificates to get the money people.

Campus Life

4

The best part about NIT's and IIT's is the diversity which gives you the most enjoyable experience ever. NIT Durgapur is like 80 percent fun, 20 percent studies. Extracurricular activities are there throughout the year from sports to fests to quizzes to debates and what not. We have students from all over the world. There is no problem regarding assimilation in this college specially if you're the "partying" kind. As far as gender ratio is concerned, I hail from the mechanical department 130 boys, 3 girls. Other departments were not as unlucky.

Hostel Facilities

0.5

The residential facilities in Nit Durgapur are one of the worst in India. Its horrible. With time we adjusted to it but it was a shocker for visitors. In our first year 3 people were supposed to stay in one room, we had 5. Second year 3, we had 4. Third y

Alumni/Alumna

Senior students were pretty helpful however the alumni network is not that strong but its developing slowly.

Exam Structure

The exam structures are cool enough. There are semester exams and mid sems the labs are also enjoyable. However, while most colleges have shifted to digital engineering graphics, we had to spend infinite hours drawing on paper. The lack of computer/CAD fa

Faculty

2.5

The faculty is pretty well equipped to teach the curriculum and prepares one fully to face the exams. However, there are a few teachers who are well below the standard one would expect from an NIT, just like every other college.

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
