Remarks

NIT DURGAPUR is not like any other college, this you'll realize only after you get into this college. Although there will be many things that will irritate you like anything but at the end if you get a good company of friends you'll manage. Just be sure that you'll have to encounter the discrimination done based on Bengalis and Non-bengalis. And the sad part is you can't help it as its tough to change this college in this aspect. So be ready to face some narrow-mindedness.Rest all will be good ,don't worry. ALL THE BEST.

Entrance Preview

I wrote the All India Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) first . I had cleared JEE Mains with a score of 157 in mains and 96% in CBSE boards (during our time boards % were being given weightage) that made my cumulative score of 175. I got ECE at NIT DURGAPUR in the first round of counselling . After getting into college, almost after one month a spot round was conducted as seats were left in many NITs, so i opted for internal sliding and got my branch upgraded to CSE(the most preffered branch by students).

Course Curriculum Overview

4

CSE in NIT DURGAPUR doesn't have many experienced proffesors , apart from a few who are exceptionally good. Only those few profs. focus and motivate for practical learning and prefer that the students should utilize their time,if they feel that classes are not so beneficial for them.Although on most part its the students who have taken the initiative to implement practical ideas. But i have seen improvement from my second year to 3rd year. The dept. has many research projects, one of them is DISARM, on which a very few colleges in India are researching. We get to choose electives in our 5th semester, basically it is given on the basis of pointers and seats available in each elective. For CSE dept. electives related to all departments are available except for their own dept. that includes OOPS and DBMS.

Internships Opportunities

The internship status this year has been very good. The internship opportunities this year were much greater than the past few years. Companies like Qualcomm who only came for placements earlier opened for the first time for internship in our college. Also Microsoft, Directi, Goldmann Sachs and JP Morgan have come for hiring interns. Many other companies had come and many will be coming in the upcoming semester. The avg. stipend was almost 30k.

Placement Experience

3.5

The placement scenario till now this year has been quite good .Apart from Microsoft ,Qualcomm, Directi, Amazon, many new companies have visited including MNCs like Goldmann Sacchs and JP Morgan. Be it core or non-core departments , many students have been placed . The avg. package is almost 6 lpa .

College Events

2.5

We have fests like Ank,the tech fest of Maths and Tech Club and Verve, the cultural fest of Literary Club in the odd sem. While in the even sem technical fests like MUKTI,of the open source club and AAROHAN, of the Tech Club are organized. Aarohan is one of the largest tech fests of east India. The even sem also notices Recstacy, the cultural fest of the college which is full of various online-offline events and pro-nites.The students participate with full zeal and enthu and the college helps in organizing.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is affordable and is same across like all NITs. In fact for our batch the semester fee is almost 43000 and hostel fee for the entire year makes up around 26-30k. However from our junior batch onwards the fee was based on the annual income that has made it more affordable for some.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes the college provides various types of scholarships. I avail the Minority Scholarship by the central govt. but i know that there is scholarship that the college provides itself for the economically weak students.

Campus Life

3

The extracurriculars are very good . You can engage in Sports or various other clubs like the dramatics or the dance club or the tech clubs. The club culture is very good and one of the best things of this college . It helps you to explore yourself and improve your personality. It helps to create a healthy environment among seniors and juniors too. I like this fact a lot.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Yes i'm a hosteler. The hostel for the first years girls is not good in infrastructure and facilities but yet it has its own thing which sets it apart from other hostels. One realises it after the first year has passed and you can't get that hostel back. Although boys have good hostel in their first year. Girls have very good hostel from their 2nd year , they are equipped with all good facilities. The rooms are to be shared among 3 or 4 depending on the strengh of students. In final year either all get single seaters or the rooms are shared in 2. As already mentioned the hostel mess fee accounts to almost 2700 for non-vegetarians and 3200 for vegetarians as now we have centaralized Veg Mess and the food is better in terms of quality and variety.

Alumni/Alumna

I didn't had any alumni interaction and the college doesn't provide any such platform too. However there's an active college alumni network and site too and yes the alumni do help in the development of the college and its students by bringing in internship and placement opportunities.

Exam Structure

The labs and exams are never tiring . Even the mid semesters and the lab exams never feel like too much a burden in CSE dept. comared to the other departments.

Faculty

2.5

The faculty in my department are all bengalis, and allmost all of them have attained their degrees from emminent institutions like Jadhavpur University or Shibpur. Most of them are quite old in age and don't interact much. Moreover i have felt that the faculty in some way more comfortable and interactive with Bengali students here and favour them a lot. However till now in 3rd year the teachers that have taught me among those 2-3 are really good teachers who are ready to do their best to help out the students with their ideas and want the department as well the students to progress but are strict (that actually creates a fear among student at times) while rest are there just for the sake of their job ,i feel.

Placement Experience:

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
