Remarks
Most of the Infrastructure of college is old like library, labs, hostels. I have made a lot of friends, learnt a lot of things, learnt management, played and enjoyed a lot. If I have to say in a word then it's been amazing.
Entrance Preview
For getting admitted to an NIT, one has to clear JEE Mains and admission is on the basis of one's ranking. I had a good ranking in mains and I took Mechanical Engineering. There is no interview, so it all depends on rank. I chose mechanical engineering because it is a evergreen branch, I had a liking for machines and placement in mechanical engineering was good in this college till 2012.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course is well designed but is old to cater the needs of industries. Mostly the course focuses on theoretical know how rather than practical aspects, for example we are asked to do drawing in sheets when everyone uses CAD software. Being a reputed college, a lot of labs are available and many faculties are involved in research activities. College has tie-ups with various institutions like DRDO, CMERI, CERN etc. A lot of electives are offered but due lack of enough faculty, some are not provided.
Internships Opportunities
College provides very few internship opportunities. i didn't got internship so I did industrial training and project. Stipend amount varies from company to company.
Placement Experience
Placement is pretty good and around 62% students got placed. some of the companies that visited campus are Amazon, Qualcomm, PWC, L&T, Wipro, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Directi, D E Shaw, Microsoft etc. Average package for core branches was around 5lpa, and for CS and IT it is about 7lpa.
College Events
College has two major fests, one being Aarohan (Techno management fest) and Recstacy (Cultural fest). They are well organized and last for 3-4 days. They receive footfall more than 5000. College provides most of the fund for fest and some comes from sponsors and college faculties help us and motivate us.
Fee Structure And Facilities
All IITs and NITs are govt institutions so they are comparatively cheaper and affordable. Presently fee for B.Tech at NIT Durgapur is 62500/- but can be less depending on conditions. for details please visit the college website.
Fees and Financial Aid
College provides scholarship to those students whose family income is less than 1 lpa. I didn't got any scholarship. One can easily get loan in the name of NIT.
Campus Life
there are a lot extra curricular activities like sports, dance, music, technical groups and clubs like robotics, quiz, maths, coding, offroad vehicle design etc.
Hostel Facilities
It's compulsory to take hostel, I've been residing in hostel since 1st year. Every year new hostel allotment is done and hostel may change. For first 3 years 3 students share one room and in 4th year single rooms are allotted. One can get both veg and non veg food in mess, but don't expect home food. Food is not that good and mess fee is around 3000 per month.
Exam Structure
Exams are not that frequent but we have 2-3 different practical classes every week which is of 3 hours. Some faculties are strict with attendance because college has minimum 75% attendance rule, which makes us to attend the lectures even if it is boring. There are a lot of extra curricular activities in which one can involve itself.
Faculty
Most of the faculties are NIT and IIT graduates (except few) so their knowledge is good in the field and have a lot of experience, even some have worked in industry. Most of them are interactive but few are not good with explaining questions. Most of the faculties are old fashioned as interactive boards and projectors are available in classes but no one uses it and most of them use very old notes to teach us. Course is well designed if we consider GATE because almost all topics are covered.
