Remarks

Infrastructure should be built at a faster rate in my college as a lot of works are left. College management is strict about ragging which is good but in many other issues they act like dumb and student's point of view is not considered.

Entrance Preview

I gave JEE( Main) in 2014 after my class 12th final exam. The exam did not get that much very well though, I secured AIR 92597 as I am OBC(NCL) so I got the branch of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in this college. I opted for this college because it was in my home state and I did not want to go to other states. Plus I had heard about my branch before so I took that.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

The subjects in the course curriculum are sufficient for anyone to understand metallurgy. Physical, mechanical metallurgy was taught in detail with extractive metallurgy. But I feel the whole 1st year of engineering is useless as there is no subject for any of the streams and those things don't require in the future study also. Only mathematics is important which can be taught within the departmental subjects as a compulsory one So AICTE should think about the syllabus. In my departmental subjects, many other important topics can be added. But the subjects which had been taught is sufficient for the GATE exam.

Internships Opportunities

No, my college does not provide an internship. The maximum you can do a project under any professor where no general stipend is provided.

Placement Experience

3.5

As the steel market is just getting better, companies did visit us for the placement. Ar first MN Dastur visited in the month of August '17 as far I remember the package was 3.5 lacs as the location was in Kolkata. Only 1 got the job there. Next came Tata Metalliks with 7.5 lacs package. No one was selected from our branch. Then Vedanta came with 5.5 lacs package and 12 were selected. For Jindal Stainless steel package was around 5 lacs and 3 people selected. Jindal steel Dolvi works came with the same package and 2 people got selected. At last Lalwani, Ferroalloys came with the package of nearly 3 lacs and 2 people were selected. You can get job opportunities in PSU like SAIL, IOCL, RINL, NALCO after securing a good rank in Gate exam. Barc, Drdo is also there for you provided you have excellent knowledge about this subject.

College Events

4

Aarohoon is the biggest techno-management fest that happens in our college it is a 3-day fest. Lots of events are there on robotics, new ideas, online games. Lots of participants come to our colleagues from other colleges also. There is ANK, VERVE some other fests that happens. Centre for Cognitive Activities for CCA is the main club of our college doing many fests also other clubs are there like Recursion, Literary circle.

Fee Structure And Facilities

When I was admitted in the college the semester fee was Rs 35000. This rate is same for all other NITs also. As all NITs are residential college the hostel charge varies in NIT Durgapur the hostel charge was around Rs 6600 per semester. Apart from this, you have the pay mess fee per month for the foods. Which is around Rs 2200 average of all the semester ranging from Rs 1800 to Rs 3000. The fee structure was on the higher end till 2015. But from 2016 the whole fee structure was revised for NITs and IITs also. Now semester fee stands at Rs 67000 but it is for the students whose family income is above 4.5 lacs per annum, for below that income to upto 1 lac you get some waiver and semester fee is then around Rs 22000, below that income you will get more waiver.

Fees and Financial Aid

Institute gives merit cum means scholarship to the students who are good in academic and whose family income is up to Rs 120000 per annum. You will get Rs 35000 per annum.

Campus Life

3

I think this college life was a very important part of my life. As it changed my life in a various way. When you are living on your own here get to learn and know many new things about yourself and also about your surroundings. The campus is quite green, two big grounds are there, also gym is there. There are many student workshops going on around the year. Various courses are also carried out by the departments. Annual sports are held.

Hostel Facilities

2.5

As hostel facility is compulsory we have stayed in the hostel. The 1st year's hostel was very nice but without LAN connection as it was newly commissioned. Still now as I have left the college I heard that there was no LAN connection. Only Wifi is there. In the first year, each room has 4 people. From 2nd year we moved to a different hostel, it was old but has LAN connection the building is not so good for staying but we have enjoyed as you get your freedom from 2nd year onwards, here also 4 people per room and also in 3rd year you have to stay in this hostel. In my final year, I moved to a different hostel, in final year two hostel are there all are having a single room. The facilities are same as previous year's hostel. Coming into the mess food it is totally messy, you can get good food rarely here.

Alumni/Alumna

Our college's alumni network is very strong I believe, each year alumni meet is organized by NIT DURGAPUR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, If you have contacts with senior students they are always helpful.

Exam Structure

There are 8 semesters in any engineering course. The odd semester was in the month of November and even semester in the month of may. The schedule of classes was hectic in few semesters and was well organized in few. There was one mid-semester exam after 1.5 months of the session. Lab exams took place 10 to 15 days early of semester examination. But there can be a lot of changes there in the dates but everything has a time period within which the exams have to be taken.

Admission

After the rank of JEE MAIN announced common counseling was held online, I participated there and after 3rd round I got the seat there. After that NIT Durgapur in their website mentioned the dates of detailed admission procedure, I went there on first day to secure my admission. Before that I had to go for the seat confirmation physically to a counselling centre. In the college the procedure was very easy with a few form fillups.

Faculty

3

About the faculty, it is not easy to assess for a student. Now in my department, there are few well knowledgeable faculties are there who taught us very well also they are very interested in the subjects. Some are not quite up to the mark, they only copy and write on the board from there notes. So we have to study on our own and understand the subject but if you have any doubts you can always ask the professors for help.

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
