Remarks
College authority should spend more on the lab and hostel infrastructure as most of them are quite old.Labs also needed to be provided with good number of new instruments as the old ones are quite inaccurate.
Course Curriculum Overview
As a student of Metallurgy, when i got admitted in 1 st year, all students irrespective of any branch, have to study common subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, england, computer science in the 1st semester and engineering mechanics, electronics, electrical, engineering mathematics ,physical education, engineering design in the next semester. From 2nd year onwards students get divided due to their respective branches in engineering. From here they study all the branch/course specific subjects.Course curriculum from the 2 nd year is almost good except we had to study data structure, operations management and electives such as economics, which are specifically not related to metallurgy.Rest subjects such as phase transformation, iron making are directly related to the course. There are in total 8 semesters in 4 years of B.Tech.Semester paper carries 70 marks.20 marks class tests are taken and 10 marks is alloted to class performance and attendance So that brings a total of 100 marks.Marks are given in the semester on grade points basis.
Placement Experience
Placements are dependent in the branch of BTech.Mostly computer science,Electronics,Mechanical engineering students get very good placements. The avg.package is around 8-10 lpa for Computer Science.Even companies like De Shaw ,Microsoft, goldman sacchs visits the campus at packages of 31 lpa and 30 lpa and 32 lpa respectively.Mechanical engineers have a plenty of opportunities as a lot of companies hire mechanical engineers.Computer Science and Electronics student get good packages.Rest for Metallurgy and Biotechnology, the placement scenario is not rozy.Very Limited companies(5-6) visit the campus for Metallurgy students.Internships are generally there for students of Computer science,Electrical,Mechanical.Stipends are generally 10-20 k for mechanical but above 40k for Computer sience.Otherwise you can apply for internships at any firm or under professors at IITs /IISc by personally mailing them.I did my internship at IIT madras where i was offered a stipend of 6000 rupees per month for 2 months. It was a great experience of Internship at one of the premier institutes of India.I worked on a computer based simulation software. My alloted guide at internship was very busy and mostly the Phd scholars under her used to help me in my work.Overall it was quite a good learning experience to learn how thesis are written and how rigorous working is required to complete a project from IIT.
College Events
There are many fests organized by the clubs in our colleges. Some of them are 1) Recstacy, the biggest cultural fest of the college organised by CCA(club). It consists of unique gameplay events, cultural events, fashion shows, and performance by renowned singers, comedians. 2) Aarohan ,the annual techno management fest organised by MNTC(Maths and Tech club).it consists of quiz and other exhibitions consisting of projects submitted by students. 3)Virasat ,organized by Spic Malay music club where renowned musicians perform 4)Aavishkar the tech fest organised by MNTC.More or less its like Aarohan.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure now depends on family income. For students below 1 lakh p.a family income, semester fee per semester is ?7350.Between 1-5 lakhs is ?28184-28658.And above 5 lakhs is ? 69850-70000. You have to pay these every semester for 8 semester depending on family income. It is quite feasible depending on your family's income level.
Fees and Financial Aid
Good scholarships are there for SC/ST and Obc and General students depending on merit and parental income. Two of my friend used to get ?20k per semester as his family income was below 80k p.a. but they had good grade points(above 7.8).Loan can be availed at SBI by producing a bonafide certificate of the institute. You can easily get loan due to the brand of NIT.In my metallurgy branch steel chair scholarship is there which provides ?10k per month to rank holders in 2nd year from 3rd year onwards to final year.OP Jindal scholarship is also there for Metallurgy,Mechanical and Civil Engineering students depending on the written exam of OP jindal and interview. It provides a 70k per semester to deserving students.
Campus Life
Extracurricular activities such as yoga,NCC and NSS are there in 1st year only.If you want to continue pursuing your interest in the field of dance, music, literature or event management, dramatics ,its better to join a club such as dance club, spic macay,Literary circle,Enteract. They will give you a good taste of the social life away from the daily tiresome routine.Sports such as football ,cricket, basketball, hockey, badminton is promoted along with participation in INTER NIT tournaments for the selected candidates from each college.Overall promotion and practise of sports is food.Labs are definitely better for Computer science,Biotechnology students with ACs and proper infrastructure.Mechanical,Electrical, civil,Metallurgy people have shabby labs like godowns in the college campus which are old and need good renovation now.Labs which are present inside the departments are relatively better. But in most departments labs need good instruments and machines in more numbers. In our department of metallurgy,we had only 3 microscopes for batch of 68 students.you can now guess the pathetic situation of the labs here.
Hostel Facilities
1st year hostel hall 11 was very good as it was a new hostel in 2014.4 persons in each room depending on registration numbers.2nd year onwards the hostels alloted are hall 4,hall 1 and hall 5 ,which are age old and do not have spacious rooms.Difficult to accomodate 3 peoples.Still you have to manage somehow.Hostels do not have any facilities as such.Hostel mess is there.Mess food was not very tasty except on wednesday when we had special dinner.common room is there with a Tv.Games like table tennis and carrom were provided.otherwise you can play Outdoor games such as cricket in the fields of the college campus.Wifi facility is there along with LAN.Overall boys hostel are shabby old buildings except the new ones that are coming.
Alumni/Alumna
Alumni network is very good. They provide a lot of efforts in the campus placements and internships.Good alumni base helps a lot in bringing new emerging companies. There has been a tremendous improvement in the job scenario in 2018 due to proper communication between alumni and the college. Most Senior students are very helpful regarding how you should manage your time in college to cope up with daily subjects ,college classes and participation in club activities. They helped us a lot during placement and internship opportunities.Overall if you associate with your seniors,it will be a good bonding throughout college life. However don't believe the myth of the line "GPA doesn't matter" as spoken by some seniors. It matters a lot when it comes to higher studies. Some companies even set a High GPA only for shortlisting during recruitment.
Admission
For getting admission in any NIT,we have to give the JEE Mains entrance exam for Engineering after class 12.Depending on your marks in the exam choice of colleges and branches will be given to you as the counselling process begins.
Faculty
Most of the faculty is very friendly. You can reach out to them anytime. They were very helpful to me when i went to solve GATE exam questions.Class notes given by some professors are enough than to read books. You can go to professors anytime if you don't understand a subject matter. They are always ready to help.
