Experience at NewCastle University

Admission Experience

  • I applied to following colleges:
    1) University of Aberdeen - Admitted - confirmed
    2) Warwick University - Rejected (because I didn't have enough work experience in analytics sector - and didn't have enough computer related modules in my bachelor's program)
    3) Newcastle University (Admitted - confirmed and Accepted- I chose Newcastle University , because it had a great module structure and professors)
    4) Nottingham Trent University - Admitted - confirmed
    5) Jacob University Breme - Admitted - confirmed
    6) National College of Ireland - Admitted - confirmed
  • I chose Newcastle University because it had a great module structure and professors and with it being with National Innovation centre for data , I was really inclined towards it and I got an internship and my did my final thesis with National Innovation Cenntre for Ageing.
  • I started my application process with applying to the university, uploading all the required documents asked by them. Then I was shorlisted, and was asked to submit an essay about the data ethic. After submitting that, I got a conditional acceptance offer where I was asked to make a small deposit in order to confirm my acceptance. As I confirmed my acceptance I was sent an unconditional offer from the university for my course.
  • The university required 2:1 BSc hons degree or our equivalent bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or an engineering discipline with programming experience.
  • I appeared for IELTS - for english proficiency test and I had an overall band score of 8.0 (with L:9, R: 8.5, W: 7 and S:7) - the minimum scores required for IELTS is 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).
  • The overall admissions experience was really smooth , and they were extremely helpful and had a very clear communication throughout the process. The international office set up induction sessions as well (like pre departure, and international welcome etc that made the process really easy). They also connected us in whatsapp groups - and that made the things a little less overwhelming as we were properly introduced and we got to know each other and that made a world of difference.
  • I applied for September intake. That is when most of the courses are offered and in January intake there are some limited courses that are offered. September intake is comparatively better, as loads of students are coming and there are high chances of making connections and blending easily and not having to deal with extreme cold weather of UK upon arrival.
  • The admission process took almost 2-3 months. I first applied in May and received my acceptance mid of May (around 18th of May)
Upon submitting the essays and other required documents I was given my conditional offer in mid of June, and after making the deposit as per the conditions I received my uncoditional offer in July and during that time, I already started my Visa Process, TB test, Tuition fee payments everything and was done by August end.

Exam

  • Newcastle University accepts IELTS, TOEFL, and Pearson Test of English Academic - for english proficiency exam. Newcastle university even accepts GMAT exam.
  • Documents that are necessary to complete the admission process: Statement of Purpose, Letter of recommendations from your employers and your college professors would help greatly. Resume also plays an important role in showcasing all your achievements and skills. There was no interview part in my application process.

Course Curriculum Overview

  • The difficulty level was from moderate to difficult. It was a good balance of theoretical and practical approach.
  • Positive aspects included - real time projects and hands on and detailed module teaching.
Negative aspect - was the timeline and the deadline, as masters is 11 months course - the deadlines were really strict and close.Ususally 3-4 classes are scheduled, with a mix of practical and theory, and it ususally is flexible between 9am to 5pm.
  • The course content and teaching approach is set to high and satisfactory standards, but apart from those there are so many factors that you need to prepare for securing a job in the field and it ultimately comes down to you as a student and a person.

Fees

  • Tuition fees for the first year of the course: £24,300 (Band 2)
  • I was in receipt of a £4,000 VCIS scholarship and a 2% reduction for early payment of fees.
  • I was staying in a private accommodation (studio apartment) and my charges were £168 per week and my booking was for 51 weeks.
  • Regular expenses differ and it depends on every person and the way of living.
  • Students could get a bus pass and could get upto 40% discount on the monthly or yearly pass.

Scholarship

  • I met the conditions for the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship for the 2021/22 academic year. The eligibility criteria includes - a place to study master's program at the Newcastle city center campus for that academic year, should have international status amd the program must begin in September.
  • 5 of my friends that Iknow, received VCIS. 500 awards are available each year.
  • There is another scholarship by the university is Vice chancellor Excellence scholarship - that is given to 30 students. And the value of the scholarship is 50% of the tuition fee. The eligibility criteria for that is – be domiciled in one of one of the following countries: South Africa, Kenya, USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UAE, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam; be assessd as International for fee purposes; should have or is expected to receive a minimum of ABB at A level or equivalent and hold an offer for an eligible undergraduate degree programme at the University’s Newcastle city centre campus.

Faculty

  • We are all alloted a Teacher guardian and we can go to them for any kind of help or guidance. Carrers service of the university provides a great help in finding and guiding for part time and full time jobs or internships.
  • I admire the director of my Course, Dr. Matthew foreshaw and my stats professor, Dr. Joe Matthews, as they were constantly available for help and guidance and projected the modules and the courses in a way that grasping the content was made easy and fun.
  • We had almost 97 students in our class with approximately 25 Indians and a mix of students from different ethnicities. I can't provide a lot of information about the faculty student ratio in the class but can happily report (from the surveys held), that almost 71% of students were satisfied with their postgraduate taught experience.
  • The quality and the interaction of students and faculty was really acceptable to a high standard. Every professor had teaching assistants that made it easier to give importance to every student and one to one interaction.
  • Teaching methodology involved a mix of theoretical and practical approach, with a set time for self study and practice.

Campus Life

  • My college has campus in Newcastle, Singapore and Malaysia (3 campuses) and in Newcastle, the university buildings are spread all across the city.
  • They have really good gym, and sports centre with membership for students and faculties and have huge number of social clubs. University has ties with Newcastle Hospital and Medical sciences is one of the top most seeked and high rated course.
  • International Welcome week, Freshers, are two of the most important and first things that you get a chance to take part in when you arrive to the university.
  • There are several student organisations and clubs and all the information can't be provided here, because of data protection, but Student Union is one of the biggest society that helps, guides and organises lots of things on campus.

Accommodation

  • I opted for off campus accommodation.
  • I found my student accommodation with the help of google, and fresh student living property management.
  • I had a studio apartment with personal kitchen and bathroom, and my monthly rent was approximately 650 pounds. We had a social space with books, games, pool table and other fun activities that was helpful for relaxation, and making connections and socialising, and a gym and backyard and 24*7 security.
  • The search for accommodation was fairly smooth and they gave a virtual and video call tour before my confirmation, so I was satisfied.
  • Based on my experience, recommendations that I would give for future students seeking accommodation - will be get in touch with the property managements for students and make sure to get a virtual video call tour (with all the questions whether it is silly or something important).
  • My accommodation was 18 mins away (walking distance) from my uni, and most Indian students usually stay near Fenham (because of larger Asian community and Indian food store and eateries)

Placement

  • Full time job opportunities are available, and it depends on the job market and the skills you have and the experience and knowledge you have gathered throughout.
  • I don’t know about the percentage of students who secured employment withing 6 months.
  • The average salary eanges from 23k to 29k GBP per annum.
  • They have to constantly apply on job portals and make sure to tailor their resume and cover letter acording to the job roles.
  • My friends have been placed in data tech and hardware companies. NHS, and EY are some of the major recruiters.

Part Time Jobs

  • Jobs on Campus - provides a lot of temp roles and internships to students thorugh out the year.
  • To secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions, it is better to get in touch with the department professors or head to see if the position is available. Pay range is usaully 9-11 pounds per hour.
  • There are several jobs, available on campus for students, career service - internship and placement team provides a lot of information and students can subscribe to daily emails for the same.
  • 20 hours of work is allowed per week on a student visa.
  • It is competitive to secure campus part time jobs as there are several deserving candidates applying for the same.
  • A lot of Indian students prefer working in Cafe or restaurants. Greggs, Mc Donalds and Subway being their top choices. Some work for Indian restaurants as well, as they find it easier to blend in - plus you get free Indian food.
  • When talking about how easy or difficult it is for students to secure part time employment while studying, I would say it depends on how you  manage the time and how efficiently you use it, sometimes it can become overwhelming but you have to make sure to keep the studies and degree as a priority.
  • I wouldn't know about the part time job process as I never did any, but I did some internships that I got through the jobs on campus and internship team from careers service and job notification emails.

Campus Life

  • Newcastle Campus: The main city-centre site in Newcastle upon Tyne in UKwith over 100 buildings and the Newcastle Helix development.
  • NUMed Malaysia Campus and Newcastle University, Singapore, for tech programmes.
  • There are plenty of services. There is a student union, well-being support, a sports centre, and 24-hour libraries. I used to be in libraries all the time during the assignment period. You have cubicle spaces and combine study areas. You have even booked a room for yourself or for you and your friends to do team projects. You can use the computer cluster if you need to use the system.
  • There are a countless clubs and societies for you to pick from. I was part of the Indian Arts Society at the university and have participated in and attended many cultural events.

Fees

  • £28000 for my tuition fees, divided across two semesters, but with a scholarship, it came down to £24000. I paid £2000 to secure my offer and place at the university. There is no credit-based system across the university. However, since I struggled to pay my second sem fees, I requested an installment plan and was able to pay monthly fees towards my tuition, but that happened only once. Normally, they expect you to pay the first half at the start of the first semester (as soon as you join) and the rest at the start of the second semester (last week of January).
  • For my accommodation, I applied early for the uni accommodation, and I only paid £392 per month as rent for 12 months I stayed there, which is inclusive of electric, water, heater, and wifi bills. This was the cheapest but the best accommodation I have lived in the UK, as the university has great accommodation standards, even for the cheaper accommodations.

  • Newcastle University had several clubs (list was extensive; can be found in their Students Union website). With regards to the campus buildings, we did have 3 big centers. However, there could be more catering to STEM or other such degrees. Since, I was at the Business school i never ventured into any other buildings.

Fees

  • Fee was 20,500 gbp .

  • It has a single, large city campus with excellent facilities like the library, sport Centre and medical support. There are many active student clubs, including cybersecurity and tech societies. I enjoyed attending cultural events, international student meetups, and career fairs. The campus is vibrant, safe and student-friendly making it easy to get involved in extracurricular activities.

  • Main University, NUBS, Urban science building, FDC, The core, the catalyst, helix—this is all I am aware of.
  • Library, sports building, cafe, student hub, student union, IT cluster.
  • Freebie events for freshmen, elections for student union officers, and so many.
  • We can be a part of any of the societies by subscribing to them, and we can also attend all the events conducted by all other societies by enrolling in them. We can also register to be a part of any particular sport. Student Union is always open for students to drop in.

Fees

  • The tuition fee was 28900 GBP. I got the university's scholarship worth 4000 GBP. So, I have paid 24900 GBP for my tuition fee. I'm living in private accommodation, so hostel fees are not included.
  • It is annually and semi-annually. I have taken a bank loan to fund my fees so I have paid in full before travelling to the UK.
  • My expenses are as follows:
    • Food: 200 GBP
    • Transportation: 40 GBP
    • Rent: 500 GBP

  • Newcastle has a Medical campus, Business campus, Engineering campus, Arts& Media campus. Business campus is located in NE4
  • The university offers library services 24/7, an exquisite gym and sport facilities. The sports building is located in NE2. However, the medical services are not that great as their process is a bit time consuming and requires patience.
  • As an Indian international, the Indian society offers a diwali ball every year which a major fest outside campus. In addition, we have lot of latino fests, freshers fair, freebies fair etc
  • We have 2 societies relating to indian culture. The one in which I am involved is HASS (Hindu &Sikh society)

Fees

  • Received a 4k pounds scholarship from every year's tuition fee.
The fee structure was as follows: 20000 for programme
    7000 for accommodation
    400 per month for living

  • The fees is charged through an online portal. It can be submitted for one year directly or be split in for two semesters. Transportation costs are not much for Newcastle if you live in the city centre, every place is within walking distance. Other regular expenses like groceries cost me around $ 30 per week.

  • Newcastle University has three campuses in Newcastle, Malaysia and Singapore.
  • All facilities are available in my campus such as the library, medical sports and others. Events are organized all over the year. There are societies for your choice of interest and you can participate in any societies like chess, dancing, football, coding or photography. All events are organized by groups of students.

Fees

  • For my course the total fees was £30600 for 2024 batch which include 1500 as a confirmation fee.
  • University accommodation starts from £98 per week and it depends on your choice of accommodation.
  • You can submit your fees in 3 installments or in one time.
  • It is advisable to walk as all locations are nearby and to save transportation cost but if you choose to travel by bus then single journey cost is £2 and £6 for full day. Apart from that £80 per month needed for other expenses.
