Remarks
NIT Durgapur is a good ranking college being an NIT. The campus is good and has been upgraded now. The college facilities are decent considering it is a govt college. The faculty is good and might be supportive depending upon your department. Good aspects: 1. Good ranking of the college 2. All facilities are present on the campus 3. Activities conducted all year round so you might not feel bored 4. The hostel is good with wifi and LAN ports 5. No curfew timings inside the campus for all (including girls) 6. Library open till midnight Bad Aspects: 1. Some faculty might not be supportive 2. Mess food not very good 3. Labs for the ECE dept are not modern.
Course Curriculum Overview
My course was ECE. It gives you a good chance to study both the software part as well as hardware aspects of electronics. There are around 10-15 faculty members in the department and the number of students is around 100 each year. The faculty members are all well qualified and have knowledge of their subjects. The only con is some students may find their English (Bengali accent) a little difficult to understand. Otherwise, the staff and faculty are supportive. One can start with academic and research projects from 2nd year itself after entering the department. There are 4 exams conducted: 2 mid sems and 2 end sems. The exams are not very tough. Classnotes, prescribed books and past year papers are enough. You can expect to score more than 8 CGPA if you are a decent student.
Internships Opportunities
Internships are offered by some companies visiting the campus for full time placements. You can sit for them if you are eligible. But most students have to arrange for internships on their own. You can also do internships in your department under a professor depending on your interest.
Placement Experience
You are eligible to sit for placements from the 7th semester (for Btech). Some companies also offer internships for which 3rd year students can sit. The placements are good for some departments like CSE, IT etc. All major companies visit the campus like Microsoft, Amazon, Qualcomm, IOCL, BEL, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Factset, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Vedanta, Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla, L&T, Mahindra, Tata Motors, PwC, ZS Associates, Coal India, C-DOT, Oracle, Capgemini, few start-ups , etc. You can expect to get placed if you have prepared well. The average package is around 6-7lpa. The highest package is offered by IT majors like Microsoft and Amazon (>20LPA ). Some students also prepare for higher degree exams like GATE, CAT, GRE etc. Students also receive offer for MS and PhD in foreign universities depending on your academics and research interests.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees of all NITs and IITs are decided by the central govt. During my admission, it was around 47k per semester, which I think is around 65k now for general candidates. There are some scholarships provided to ST and SC students and also for students with annual income less than some prescribed amount. Some students even apply for student loans (check the bank websites to know more). The placement is good for some branches (not 100% guaranteed). But the number of companies visiting the campus has increased. You can sit for placements depending on the company requirements. You cannot sit again after getting placed, except if the offer is through mass placement. The companies that visited include Microsoft (highest package of 40lpa), Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, IOCL, Factset, Coal India, C-DOT, BEL, Wipro, JP Morgan Chase, Amazon, L&T, RIL, Vedanta, etc. The average package is 6lpa.
Campus Life
The campus life is good and you will enjoy your time here. There are many clubs which you can either join or you can take part in the contests that they organize. Either way, it is fun and enjoyable. Some of the clubs are: 1. CCA - tech and entrepreneurship club 2. Maths n Tech Club 3. Prakriti - technoenvironment club 4. Strokes - painting and photography 5. DC - dance club 6. Music Club 7. Literary Circle 8. EDC - Entrepreneurship 9. Spic Macay 10. GNU/Linux users' group There are 2-3 fests organized ( they might have been reduced now ) all of which are huge and enthralling. Apart from these, there are sports competitions organized like basketball, football, cricket, badminton, volleyball etc. There are 2 playgrounds,1 SAC, 1 gym, 2 badminton courts, 1 basketball court, 1 tennis court. You will find students engaged in one or the other activity like clubs, sports, etc. The library has 1 AC reading hall, and you can find all course related books. magazines & journals here.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities are good, except for 1 or 2 hostels which are old. They will gradually be shifted to the newly constructed hostels. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. Every room will have a bed, a table-chair and an almirah per student. The student occupancy will vary. For girls, it is usually 2-3 students in one room. There are wifi and LAN ports in all hostels. The rooms are comfortable and airy. You will have to arrange your own mattress ad pillow. The mess food is okay, not very good. Overall it is decent and does not cost much. The hostel fee is included in the college fees since the hostel is compulsory for all. The mess fee will cost 15k per semester. Apart from the mess, there is a college canteen and 4-5 other outlets (small dhabas) within the campus and also outside the campus that provides affordable food.
