Remarks
Being an NIT it gave more exposure, and gave a brand value along with quality education , good placements and decent research opportunities. It was far from home , so I could experience hostel life and have a holistic improvement due to more interaction with different kinds of people. I thought it to be a good kickstart for my career
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose Mechanical Engineering , the very reason being I loved the subjects in this domain. The faculty at NIT Durgapur is not so good right now but are good researchers as everyone expects to be, the curriculum needs few changes , for example Material Science , Refrigeration are not taught right now in the course but are integral part of mechanical engineering , being an NIT we expect atleast all the syllabus of gate being taught here, but that doesn't not occur. Exams are taken in time and questions are standard solving GATE questions will be sufficient for preparation. Teaching methods are poor I surely think more better proffesors can really help the institute to grow.
Internships Opportunities
I have not opted for internship through campus placement , but I am doing research internship at IIT Kharagpur , and internship opportunities for core departments are quite less , till now PWC has taken 13 students and Tata Metallics have come for internship so far , stipend is around 30k-50k of Mechanical student. For circuit branches many companies are there from Microsoft to Wells Fargo , Texas Instruments etc and many of my friends have secured internships, and stipend vary from 60k-90k per month .
Placement Experience
Students are eligible for campus placement from 5 th semester, and on average 130-150 companies visit our college every year . Delloite made offer to 54 students , PWC made offer to 39, making data analytics the biggest sector of placement , core companies like Hero , Bajaj , Texas Instruments , Bosch, L and T , Tata Metallics also visit the campus . The highest package for 2021-2022 is 44 Lpa so far offered by Microsoft and average package is still unavailable but it lingers around 7-8 Lpa for all the departments combined. More than 85% of the students gets placed and others go for higher studies or prepare for competitive exam, which is the case for any Institute of National Importance .
College Events
The campus is situated in a very calm loaction of Durgapur , but not so far away from the city so has good accessibility . The social life of the campus is one of the most gossiped about thing, including string senior junior relationship. For any trouble , if the junior knows some senior he/she helps them in any manner possible . There are various clubs ranging from technical to cultural , having year round events , Aarohan being the techno-management fest which is held in february, Nityamini being cultural fest held in april. Other than that Tedx is organised. Ecell has its own fest , Literary Circle , SPICMACAY also has their own fests , giving students plethora of exposure. NIT Durgapur infrastructure is recently getting more revamped with a new auditorium, updated library, new hostels , academic buildings also, overall it is really gaining its pace to compete with top NITs. As a student with research interest , I can say that plenty of journals are available in the library and also lot of ebooks and e-journals are available. In first year there is mandatory sports where students have to attend some kind of sport or yoga , thus giving chance to every student to pursue sports. Inter-NIT sports gives the platform to showcase their skills.I am a part of a team , namely TEAM NDORS and SAE NIT DURGAPUR club , where everything is managed by the students , though a faculty advisor is present, from whom permissions are required to be taken . Overall NIT Durgapur gives an ambience where a student can grow if he/she wants to .
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure has three parts , 1) Above 5 LPA family annual income full fees has to be given 2) between 2-5 LPA family annual income 40% of the fee is to be given 3) Below 1 LPA family annual income a very small amount maybe around 5k per year has to be given . Various Government scholarships are available , and in this sector the institute helps needy students very much
Campus Life
Sports facilities include a gym, table tennis , basket ball court ,voley ball court, badminton court, two football ground , cricket practise pitch, a student activity centre, two auditoriums, a central library of three stories. Wifi in hostels are pretty weak but in libraby wifi speed is around 100Mbps and in computer centre around 330 Mbps. All labs are present of every department , and new instruments are being added over the time, giving a lot of research opportunities . Computer workstations are also present for strong computational output.
Hostel Facilities
For first year , Hall 11 is alloted for boys and Hall 7 for girls . Hall 11 is recently built thus has good facilities , though internet connection is very poor and mess food as any other college mess is not so good. But during the end of first year mess authority changed and food quality became better. The other hostels (HALL 1 & 2 - 2nd year boys, HALL 2 & 3 third year boys, HALL 4 & 5 - Final year boys , Hall 13- 2nd , 3rd, 4th year girls ) have better internet connection and as the year increases mess food quality also increases. Having ate in all the hostel messes, I can responsibly say final year hostels have best food quality. Hostel is very affordable 1200 rupees is required for each semester and mess charges are around 5000 rupees per semester. PG and PHD hostels are also there, they are probably better than undergrad hostels.
Admission
As for the Btech students no interview or group discussion was there , students were alloted seat on the basis of their ranks. The written test is actually JEE MAINS which is not so easy exam and has 30 question each from Physics Chemistry and Mathematics from the whole syllabus of class 11 and 12 . A very good amount of preparation is required for cracking the exam with decent rank to get into the institute which is currently 6 th among all NITs
