A look into a NIT Durgapur student perspective

Pros : Placements, Tag of the college, relatively large campus ,Cons : Old/dilapidated of some hostels and buildings, average food, Outdated curriculum, Very remote location(Durgapur) so might cause travel issues(though airport and train station is present, still quite cumbersome and expensive to travel from international countries via transfer flights

My passion lies in CSE, so I took CSE in this college. Faculty is not bad but to truly progress,one has to rely on efforts independent from college curriculum . Most of the faculty members have completed their Mtech/PhD from IITs. Three exams throughout the semester(15 + 25 + 60) .sometimes an exam can be replaced with an assignment or viva. Exams are not difficult if you have listened ardently to the lectures or have notes of someone who does . Most teachers use a projector to present their laptop screen for teaching.

Companies mainly come during the beginning of the third year to take interns and provide PPOs(recently have started giving PPIs) on their performance .Microsoft in 2021 and 2020 has especially taken quite a few interns(~17) each year . In 2021, Microsoft, Amazon, JPMC, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Codenation are a few companies which arrived on campus. A few others like PwC, Piramal arrived on campus as well. Mostly the stipend ranges from 40k - 80k for large MNCs.People also intern under IIT and foreign institute professors for research exposure.

Companies mainly come on campus for interns in beginning of 3rd Year as well as for placements in the beginning of 4th Year. Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, JPMC, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm ,Texas Instruments are a few of the MNCs that on campus for the SDE profile. All the mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Deloitte also visit the campus. The placement for CSE branch is over 90% . In our college the main culture is for companies to take a few interns and provide PPOs(Pre placement Offers) to them on how well they perform, so most MNCs don't visit all of the time for 4th Years .Microsoft provides 40CTC(highest) while Amazon provides around 27CTC . JPMC mainly hires via a hackathon and provides 12lpa .A few students have managed to get intern off campus offers from Google as well in 2020.

There are many clubs within the college and several of them conduct(independently or jointly) quite a few fests in the college .The tech fest of the college is aarohan which occurs during November usually and the main non technical fest is NITyamani which is held towards the end of year (around March) . These are alloted months in offline mode, dates vary in online mode of college.Plenty of books are available in the library, no shortage of books. An advice to the students is to get the relevant semester books right when the semester starts else you may have to buy the book .There are 2 main grounds where students usually practice a lot sports. (Mainly football and cricket )Also plenty of basketball and tennis courts in the campus.In the contest of clubs ,there are a plethora of technical and non technical clubs , there is a Competitive Programming Club(Recursion)., an open source club(GLUG), IEEE student branch, ISTE student branch, Maths and Tech club, Society of Automobile engineers (SAE), Center Of Cognitive Actiivites(CCA).On the non technical side , we have Literary Circle , Debating Society, Art and Photography club (STROKES), RadioNITROZ, Quiz club(Quizinc)., classical Indian club(SPIC MACAY).

Fees is usually 60k for one semester excluding the mess fees(hostel). Hostel fees usually averages around 5k . There are a few scholarships available but most are not for the general category . Also financial aid can be provided if family income is less, provided the income certificate is provided . If annual income less than 5lakh , fees reduces to ~30k for a semester. If annual income less than 2.5lakh , fess reduces to ~10k for a semester .I got an internship at Microsoft, as they came on campus. Stipend is 50k till previous years.

Infrastructure has improved over the years . Wifi has been a part of many hostels, if not then has has an ethernet port. Wifi speed is particularly fast at the top floors.There are network issues in the campus. Especially on the Lower floors, mobile data fluctuates a lot. Size of the library is quite large as ot was recently renovated . Equipment in labs is mostly of good quality though some are a bit damage prone .A lot buildings are in construction including a brand new auditorium as well as a new 13 floor hostel .

All the hostels have at least one bed and cupboard for one person . The number of ppl in one room is usually 3 but differs from hostel to hostel. For instance the final year hostel and DASA(foreign students) hostels have only one person in a room .Curfew is a bit strict for the first years but eases up as the first year ends.Usually there is one washroom(with mutiple cubicles) for one quadrant of a floor . Meal quality also differs from hostel to hostel, a lot of stalls are also set up throughout the campus in case anyone has additional craving . Also the fees for the hostel in compulsory in case you feel it's not comfortable for you , you can rent rooms outside the campus but at additional cost.Registration of the hostel is just submitting a form at the beginning of the semester at the hostel counter.

Only passing the JEE Mains cutoff was the admission criteria . No group discussion was held . Nor were any interviews taken . Only college selection via JOSAA is required for Btech admission .
